CUSTER COUNTY SEARCH & RESCUE

On Wednesday, Custer County S&R responded to an injured hunter who had fallen roughly 100 feet down a steep, rocky slope near the Goodwin Lake trail. Due to the severe nature of his injuries and the difficulty of the terrain, S&R utilized the Lifeguard 4 helicopter from Flight For Life. The Colorado Army National Guard with Rescue Techs from the Colorado Hoist Rescue Team then conducted a hoist rescue bringing the subject to the CCSAR Search Base for a tail-to-tail transfer with Lifeguard 3 to complete the transport to a Colorado Springs hospital.

A courtesy reminder to hunters and backcountry travelers: off-trail rescues in the Colorado backcountry are exponentially more difficult to execute. Because it can take hours to reach an injured party, it is especially important to travel with reliable two-way communication devices, adequate clothing for long periods of inactivity, and suitable food and water.

As always, we recommend that you know before you goby visiting cotrip.org before hitting the road.
